It can result in a number of different injuries to the teeth and jaws. Traumatic injuries can cause a number of tooth issues, including craze lines in the enamel, root fractures, tooth discoloration, and pulp necrosis. All of these can require treatment.
Traumatic injuries are injuries to the body caused by various blunt and penetrating mechanisms (such as falls, road traffic accidents, assaults, burns). They can cause serious systemic shock that requires immediate medical attention. Some traumas can be handled at home with a good first-aid kit, but others require an ER visit and stitches to repair. The severity of an injury is assessed by a triage classification system that prioritizes patients based on their needs. The more traumatic your injury, the more time it takes to heal. It’s also more likely that you’ll have complications such as pulp necrosis, which is a severe dental condition that can be difficult to treat. This is why it’s important to get a professional dental diagnosis as soon as possible after your concussion. There are a variety of injuries that can occur to the hard tissues of the tooth root (ie, dentin and cementum) and soft tissues (ie, the dental pulp) after a trauma. Some of these injuries can be complex, and require immediate intervention and treatment. These injuries are called root fractures and can occur at any level of the tooth’s root, including the apical third and middle third of the root as well as subcrustal in the coronal third. The location of the fracture affects how it is managed. A tooth that is fractured and not displaced into any direction should be stabilized with a composite material for 1 week. Pulp tests should be performed when the splint is removed and again 3 months later. If a nonresponsive pulp test occurs, root canal therapy may be required. Teeth can become discolored for a variety of reasons. Extrinsic stains are the result of foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, wine, and dark sodas that contain strong colors that stain teeth. Intrinsic stains are a result of medical conditions, such as celiac disease or rickets, as well as certain illnesses that affect the enamel development of children (under the age of 8). Tooth trauma, especially in childhood, can also cause internal tooth discoloration. Medications that your mother took during the second half of her pregnancy can also cause internal tooth discoloration. Tetracycline antibiotics, for example, can be absorbed by the body and lead to a brown-black stain on teeth. Tooth discoloration can occur when the blood vessels and dentinal tubules in a damaged tooth break down. Depending on the severity of the injury, the tooth may die or it may need treatment. This is why it’s important to seek dental care as soon as possible after a concussion. Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) can cause pulpal necrosis if the tooth is not protected within a short time period following trauma. This is caused by bacterial contamination of the exposed pulpal tissue and/or an inflammation response. The occurrence of pulp necrosis can be reduced by the use of a revascularization procedure, such as a root canal obliteration (PCO), or by pulpectomy. The prognosis of a pulpal-involved tooth depends on the presence of other concomitant injuries, the time elapsed between exposure and treatment, bacterial infection and the stage of root development. The treatment objective is to maintain pulp vitality and restore aesthetics and function.
